School VisitsA School visit is a chance for students to learn what goes on behind the scenes in cartooning, and to see examples of cartoon art of animation, comic books, and comic strips which were created by top cartoonists. School visits are up to four hours long and consist of an assembly program, drawing workshops with breakout groups of students and a teacher inservice. In addition, an autographed copy of the book CARTOONING BASICS is presented to your school for use in their media center. School visits vary from a day to weeks. Fees start ar $300/day. e-mail CartoonC@Juno.com The School AssemblyThe visit usually begins with an energy-charged assembly program so everyone will get to know Duane or Angie. Original comic book, comic strip, and animation art is shown and students get to know some of the 'secrets' of cartooning. This is a good chance for students to ask questions and have them answered by experienced cartooning teachers. Drawing DemonstrationThe second part of the assembly is a drawing demonstration showing how basic shapes can make dynamic characters. The drawings are done on flip chart tablets and the originals are signed and are left for the school. When flip charts are not available, an overhead projector may be used. When possible, students are encouraged to bring a pencil and paper to the assembly and draw along with the demonstration. School assemblies usually last from 45-90 minutes E-mail CartoonC@Juno.com for available dates and fees Drawing WorkshopsNext comes meetings with smaller breakout groups of up to 20 students where students will create their own characters using the cartooning techniques demonstrated during the assembly. The fun sessions allow one-on-one instruction in technique and suggestions for how students can use their cartooning skills. The purpose for this session is to give students an idea of what it feels like to be a cartoonist. Besides creating characters, simple two-part animation is also taught. Students will need pencils, a few sheets of copier paper, and a black felt-tip or "Rolling Writer" ball point pen. Allow 50-90 minutes per workshop. Drawing workshop fees start fro as little as $300/ day. Teachers often re-teach this lesson in their own classroom. Besides the mini-lesson, facts about cartooning history and additional cartooning resources are presented. Questions about cartooning and ideas about how cartooning can be used in the classroom to teach other subjects are discussed in the inservice sessions. Inservice sessions are often individualized to fit the particular needs of the school. Teacher inservice and training available for: Teacher inservice and training seminars start at Questions?
